Case Study: Portland Trail Blazers Scoreboard Design

The Portland Trail Blazers were taking the big leap
into the 21st Century, upgrading their center-hung scoreboard and
in-arena signage. They came to Kitten for help designing the topper
for the scoreboard. This was to be a static piece that would need
to stand the test of time, both for financial and practical purposes.
When Kitten met with the Trail Blazers, we used our combined familiarity
with the team to come up with two solid directions to start with.
The Blazers were sure that they wanted to represent their home in
this highly prominent area of the arena, the only question was how
best to accomplish that. When brainstorming about what makes Oregon
such a unique and wonderful place to be, the list quickly became
long—we had the welcome problem of too many options.

Kitten went back to the drawing board, exploring two paths initially:
one displaying a different scene on each of the four panels, and
the other displaying the same repeated scene. For the first option
we decided to loosely represent what was to Portland’s north,
south, east and west, including the coast, downtown, Mount Hood and
the Fremont Bridge. For the repeated panel, we created a composition
that combined elements from each of the four different panels.
After a few rounds of sketches we brought the art into Illustrator
and began working more specifically on the feel of the piece, exploring
photographic, full-color and silhouetted imagery.

Picturing what
each panel would look like at 21 feet long, from 20,000 different
vantage points, not to mention television, was a challenge to say
the least. After meeting with the company fabricating the piece,
Tube Art, we were informed of the weight and depth restrictions we
needed to work within. From this point forward we worked closely
with the talented folks at Tube Art to ensure what we created would
actually work. Sean developed 3D renderings to help give the client
a more realistic view of what the final product would look like and
with these renderings, we were able to adjust lighting, placement
and depth, as well as visualize those 20,000 vantage points.

We were
honored to work with such a creative and knowledgeable team, as well
as to be a part of this challenging and high profile endeavor. We’re
very proud of the final result, and love going to games more than
ever now. Go Blazers!
